Default Up side down cam swap?

So I pulled the entire engine to do the cam swap. I had to do an oil pan, front main, rear main, and rear cover gaskets so it was just easier. Now for the cam swap...since I have the engine out should I just flip it upside down when I go to pull the cam out?? I don`t have the JRP lifter tool and flipping the engine seems like a better alternative to dowel rods. Is there anything I`m missing?

only thing i can think that could possibly be a problem is oil getting into the top end/ intake.

I would be concerned about the lifters either coming partially out and not returning properly or potentially turning in the plastic retainers. I know the retainers are designed to prevent them from turning, but again they are plastic. I don't know how much space there is between the head surface and the lifters compared to their height, but I would avoid it. Go buy some wooden dowels for about $3 and do it the correct way.

Thumbs up

With engine upside down, it will work.
i did it on my Crate engine and it took about 20 mins or so
since you have the oil pan off, i would recommend ARP rod bolts too.

Default Tool

I was thinking the same thing if I was going to due a future cam swap.

One member made me aware of putting 1/4 or 5/16 aluminum dowel rods through the holes behind the cam gear to hold up the lifters.

There's a write up on here about it.

Flipping the motor will work fine. There is no physical way the lifters can come out the top without taking the trays off.

That is what I was thinking. I couldn`t imagine there being a problem doing it upside down. Maybe oil running to the top end, but I was going to already have the valvecovers, pan, and basically the rest of the covers off too so that wasn`t going to be an issue. I generally like to avoid getting wood near a motor, lint from rags is bad enough but wood debris in a motor could not be good. Now I just have to decide how I am going to align the front and rear covers and oil pan.

I think I`m going to end up putting the front and rear covers back on and then the pan.
