Default long ratio rod?

Can anyone see any problems with using a 6.300" SBC rod for a 392 big bore (stock stroke) motor? The compression height seems to be thicker with this setup than would be used on a 4" stroke/6.125" rod setup so I would "think" oil controle would not be a problem.

If the compression height is good, the get the longest rod you can, I always have done that with every motor I build. It may not make anymore power, but I am convinced it adds longevity to the engine. So go for it.

any problem with it being a SBC rod (slightly offset) vs. the centered LS1?

This is a pic of my 6.3" rod and a sock bore lunati piston. It is actually the same piston you would use with a 4"stroke 6.125" rod. Compression height is the same (1.13"). You can see that there is not much land under the oil control ring, but it no where as crazy as some sbc stroker setups where the pin is actually up in the oil control ring.

They are LA Enterprise Kryptonite rods with 7/16" carr sps bolts. Overkill, but oh well. I shouldn't have to worry about kicking a rod out at 7k. He's a shot from the bottom

I think the set new with the bolts would be $1100+... I picked them up used(couple years old), and had the pin bushings replaced and honed to be as new. I think I'm into them for $600 to $700

are they "LS1" rods or are they SBC rods?

I'm trying to decide if I can get away with the SBC rods (being offset).

they are sbc rods.. if you follow the line of sight in that last pic, you can see it lines up with the center of the piston very well. The aftermarket pistons have enough room side to side to give you clearance with either rod. You can see the pin on either side of the rod in that pic.

To add a little more information on this subject, an old engine builder I was talking to just tonight said a longer rod will yield a motor that produces it's power at a higher rpm. If you are going for low rpm power, use the shorter con rod. It all has to do with the amount of time the piston spends near the top of the stroke where the combustion presure is the highest.

I'm shooting for mid to high RPM power (already have way too much low end for street tires).

Cal, is your 9" an aluminum center section or is it an aluminum housing?

Only the center section is aluminum; the rest is welded up from 1/4" steel by Moser. Even still, the complete unit only weighs 10 lbs more than the stock 10 bolt did. I think the aluminum center section option was about $150 extra.
