My best guess would be our intakes, but what about the aftermarket intakes we have out there? I know the cost of admissions into a custom intake is hefty, but how come the big money peeps on here have not tried them? We should be sporting 500rwhp by now on a 346ci and 427's should be VERY close to 600rwhp plus. A local guy dyno'd over 600rwhp NA out of a 415ci ZR1 setup. I am not going to tell you how much it cost, but I would think with the recent rise in 346ci HIGH dyno's the bigger motors would be putting out crazy horsepower as well.

furtral motorsports solid roller 346 is a electric water pump away from 500 rwhp isn't it?

415 Zr1 600 rwhp? hmm maybe its because they have DOHC? what compression was this at, pain did over 600 rwhp in a auto with high compression.

Vince comparing a ZR1(DOHC) motor to an LS1 is like comparing a Moped motor to a GXSR1000 motor.....

SR 346's are still somewhat new to the scene. Not many people have tried crazy combos with them yet. None of the well known Futral setups have very big cams, neither do most others but produce killer track results. I think with some more R&D on Heads/cam combinations, and the LSX intake with a bigger TB the 346 SR's will be hitting 500 rwhp without problems...

Right now SR's are making the gains where they count.....Area under the curve, and more RPM to make more power. That IMO is more imporant than making 500 rwhp.

I think the specs of the 415ci ZR1 are secret, but here is a link to guys talking about Limeys car. Limey chimes in and reports the #'s.

My numbers weren't super-impressive, IMO, because of the heads (we know what's wrong). We may do something different next year, but for now, I'm gonna get the car on the track for a while and have some fun. I'm a spool install away from the first track visit with the new combo... finally.

And yes, I am really looking forward to the LSx intake and the 90mm TB.

That ZR1 is rediculous

But as said above, DOHC motors are in a totally different league than pushrods motors. If Honda built a DOHC 350 ci engine using some of the S2000 technology, they'd kick everybody's ***.

You got that 409 on order yet?

Question

Can the rpm limits (7500?) of the stock computer have something to do with why more people don't go solid roller in their 346s? I mean you can still make serious power below 7500 of course and/or even upgrade to an aftermarket system (F.A.S.T. or Accel etc.) but that would be even more expensive.
Is it a reliability/maintenance issue perhaps?

Maybe someone will find out soon by putting a carb on one of the big motors.
The intake, TB and MAF are a restriction. They do not 'limit' power, but they certainly take a bite. I measured the vacuum at WOT on a friend's H/C 346 and even with a ported TB and ported MAF it still pulled around 3" vacuum by 5000 RPM. After that the vacuum reading would pulsate quickly over a range of about 3" vac on the guage. I figure the pulsing to either mean the plenum area is too small for the engine or the valvetrain wasn't keeping control over the valves.

3" vac is a pretty significant pressure drop for being just a 346.

Another side to this issue is the cam design itself. GM increased the lobe circle on the LSx cams allowing for much more radical ramps in hydraulic form. The solid roller will still allow for a more radical ramp, but the difference between that ramp and a possible hydraulic ramp isn't as large as, say, the Stang's. Cartek has a Stage 3 dyno chart on the forum right now just under 500rwhp through a 9" ford with 4.10s. That fact alone shows this stage 3 package could probably be into the 500+rwhp range.

The intake is absolutely a known inhibiter. What surprises me is how long it has been since the LSx motors came out and we still don't have a proven aftermarket product that will help out. The new FAST intake coming may help, but that is all speculation right now.

The flywheel #s given in the topic linked above does not include the direct port system. The car sounds really I saw the car at a South Georgia Corvette Gathering.

Vince,

I think intakes and cam lift/duration are the biggest reason why the SB/HS Mustangs (all motor classes in FFW/NMRA) make tons over power with SR's. Of course their engines cost $50K and probably the heads alone are near $10K. It's probably easier getting some truth out of the CIA before you will get some truth (regarding power output and specs) out of these racers/engine builders for those classes. They have HUGE LIFT AND DURATION. The cam lobes are literally like bricks. Also spinning the motor sky high over 9500+ RPM's and having custom intakes makes a difference also.
