Default 5.3L Cam

What is the biggest cam that can be used on a 5.3 LM7 engine without changing out the springs? What are my options? Are the springs on the stock heads the same as LS1 heads, or are they different?

the biggest cam you can put in your 5.3 without changing springs is a stock cam from a 98-00 LS1.

i thought the ls6 springs were rated max at .550. but a ls6 cam goes good for a boosted 5.3. otherwise id bite the bullet and get you a set of 918s and get a 220 or 224

Any performance cam is going to open and close the valves faster, and probably extend the RPM range well beyond the range of the stockers. Even cams that work with LS6 springs are pretty tame.

Limiting your choices to stock springs is limiting your performance to meager improvments, and only as long as you can maintain valve control. You might lose bottom end, only to gain in the mid-range, then lose again up top once you overwhelm the springs.

I was thinking about the LS6 springs since they are only like $60. So the LS1 cam will work with the stock LM7 springs? I'm thinking about doing that for now and later on installing something else.
