Determining Piston rings
Hi,
I've got a box of hastings rings that i bought new but the box was opened and the upper and lower rings were mixed up in the box. What i would like to know is if there is anyway of determining which are the upper rings and which are the lowers. No problem determining oil control rings obviously but i don't wont to install the upper rings where the lowers should be.
The chamfers on the rings seem identical but one ring has a smooth finish on the outside diameter almost as if it were polished and the other has a not so smooth finish. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The smooth Polished ring is most likely a molly and will be your top ring, the chamfer needs to go towards the top of the piston. The unfinished looking ring will be your second ring and is a cast iron ring, the chamfer on it needs to face the skirt of the piston.
