Default chip in head

ok, this isnt the place to post this since its a SBC cast iron head, but i need a reponse fast and god knows ls1tech is the only place for insightful, quick responses...

im looking to get a new set of heads for a sbc build im doing, and found a good set of heads within my price range, the guy says they were rebuilt 100 miles ago and were good, but says there is a small "chip" in one of the heads, not a crack, a chip

how bad is this and should i still buy the heads? if need be would i be able to stick weld this and machine it back to stock? or would it be ok to leave be... heres a pic

I would skip on those heads. That chip is far too close to the valve. Looks like it will cause a leak.

if your dead set on thoes heads, pull the valve, cut the existing seat out, magnaflux it to make sure its not cracked below the seat, if its not, weld it up, not with a stick welder, then put a new seat in it, cut the seat, and mill both heads to the same cc's....

IMO, not worth the work.

It's not worth it doing all that work on a cast iron head.

yeah i would stay away from that. Might be some fine cracks around the chip. would be too much hassle for a set of heads you actually are paying for. if you already had them then that might be different.

id look else were.
