Default oil pump

I have a 2000 SS with 173k on it and I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on if I should replace the oil pump now or just wait till the motor goes. The oil pressure gauge reads just a little over 40 when you first start it then it drops to just about half way to the next mark after 30 miles or so. On my LT car it goes up and down like the old 350 do when I drive it little over 40 then drops to around 20 at idle. Thanks for your input.

I know the 2000+ ls1 had a better designed pump than the 98-99 years. That being said I have a 98 Z28 with 170k and have not had a problem with it. It could never hurt to replace it might save you money down the road. While your in there you could always cam it

If the motor goes, it'll probably be because of the oil pump. Replace it if you want to extend the engine life. You don't want to loose oil pressure and end up ruining the block.

Thanks for the input think I will just replace it, the car runs good so maybe I could get a few more miles out of it, building a race car now so don't want to do to much to the SS right now. Cam would be good though.
