Default GM Crate Engine quality??

I was talking to a guy about this the other day and was curious. Are the GM Crate engines that you get from places like GMCrateenginedepot and SDPC the same quality as what came in the car originally? He was saying that the manufacturing tolerances/quality are different and that he's had nothing but terrible luck with buying crate engines... Burn oil, low compression, short service life, etc...

I always assumed they were of the same quality and tolerances as what came in the cars as original equipment...

I can't imagine there would be a difference. Most are just variations of productin engines (past and present).

Well, not necessarily looking for one, just wanting to know for arguments sake. I, like the first guy that posted couldn't imagine there would be a difference between the two but this guy seemed to think there was...

What's the difference for anyone who knows, between the GM performance crate engines and just the GM Goodwrench LS1, LS6, LS2, etc?? I saw them listed as two separate deals when I was reading about them earlier...

The GMPP motors are put together in small production runs, with performance parts, with a little more care, quality is better than OEM stock... these are upgrades.

The GM Goodwrench motors are put together in large production runs, with stock parts, not necessarily with any care, quality is no better than OEM stock... these are warranty replacements.

I just picked up a LS6 longblock from SDPC. After inspection, I have to say I can't find anything wrong with it. I'm happy. Can't wait to get time off, slap a cam in it and put it in the car.

Production engines run a different validation test than a performance crate engine.
Production engines must run at 110% of rated power for 100 hours without failure as I recall, the performance crate engines reduce that to 100% rated for 50 hours. They both are very tough tests that validate the parts used can take the heat!

So as far as quality issues, the GM Goodwrench Crate engines, like the LS6 mentioned above should be every bit as good as the original that came in the car?

Has anyone on here ever had issues with a GM crate? I figured the hot rodders would love the LS6, LS2 and LS3 crates... Slap heads/cam/intake/exhaust on it and drop it in. Ready to go with reliable power...

teh goodwrench engines are the same as factory stock. they have a nice warranty and is exactly the same as the original engine. some the production engines are also being sold as GMPP engines (like 5.3,6.0, etc) they have a 3 year or 100k warranty on the goodwrench motor. i order them all the time and have only seen a problem with 1 in the last seven years at a dealer. it was a 3.1L malibu engine that had the rocker arms loose.

I wonder if they corrected the piston slap issue in the new crate motors.
