Default CAM picken

I'm still planning my mods, and one thing I need to decide is the type of cam. I want good idle, good vacuum and good high-rpm power.

I've been looking at cams with mild duration, high lift and high lobe separation. I beleive this is what I need to look for to acheive my goals above (please let me know if I'm heading the wrong direction).

I plan on running the cam on an LS1 w/ LS6 intake and heads (with upgraded springs), long tube headers w/ x-pipes and a tune.

These are the cams I'm looking hardest at:
Texas 25-220R 220i 220e 0.581i 0.581e 114
Texas 25-224XE 224i 224e 0.566i 0.566e 114
Texas 25-224R 224i 224e 0.581i 0.581e 114

I'd also consider these cams, but it seems that one of specs is a little lower/high than what I need.
Lunati 55004LUN 221i 221e 0.558i 0.558e 114 low lift
Comp 54-444-11 224i 230e 0.581i 0.588e 114 high duration
Patriot 8421 225i 229e 0.580i 0.590e 114 high duration
Texas 25-228R 228i 228e 0.588i 0.588e 114 high duration

Am I looking at the right cam specs for the goals I listed at the begining? Which cam would you recommend, and why?

thanks!

With a good tune any of those cams will have a mild idle with the 228 being the roughest. It should also make the highest peak power with the comp and patriot only a few ponies behind. All will have plenty of vacuum for brakes etc... Mine is slightly bigger (230/234 .612/598 111+2 LSA) and has gobs of bottom and is a great DD. I don't think you are looking for the lope mine has though. Any of those cams will fit the bill but I would go with one of the bigger ones on your list or you will be wanting more soon when you see how smooth these cars are with a decent sized cam. Way more guys on here wish the had gone bigger than vice versa...

yeh, that's one thing I liked about Texas cams, I could specify a high lobe sep angle on any cam.

how well does the 224 idle?

I would have guessed the Texas 25-228R would have made more power. Does the exhaust duration increase power more than intake duration? Does one effect idle more than the other?

I think I figured it out. I found a forum post about dual-pattern cams.

BOBCRMAN@aol.com-------------------------------------------------------
The dual pattern cam mentioned works well with a street exhaust system. Holding the exhaust valve open longer evacuates the cylinder better. Also does not effect idle quality and retains good intake vac.

If I went with a custom grind from Texas, do think this grind would work well? Again, I want a good idle, good vacuum and good high RPM power.

Nothing wrong with that cam. Just remember there are endless possibilites when it comes to selecting the right cam. I'm glad you are looking at more than just 2 that are nothing alike.

Our Stinger Cam 224/232 113 is a mild cam with very good drivability. It is our most popular camshaft for the LS1, 2.& 3. We have many results on our website and youtube page.

Do you sell springs in a package with the cam?

I assume you were suggesting the RR-Stinger Cam?
RR-Stinger Cam 224/232 113 0.625/0.625

Does the following cam work with LS1's? How does the engine idle with this cam?
RR-LS3 224/240 113 0.625/0.625

4-6 degrees of split in the exhaust is more common for higher rpm gains, and should work fine with your plans for headers and an X-pipe. Using 12 degrees is a lot more than optimal, and will leave you with an early opening exhaust valve, possibly costing you power...

Your proposed cam has 2* overlap, while a 224/228 113 cam has the same overlap, but opens the exhaust valve 4-5 degrees later.

I think Futral Motorsports has a few cams that offer what you are looking for

Based on your comments, I assume you would recommend any of the following cams?

Comp Custom-Grind LS1 224/228 0.581/0.602 113 overlap=0
Comp 54-444-11 224/230 0.581/0.588 114 overlap=-1
Patriot 8421 225/229 0.58/0.59 114 overlap=-1

I found the forumla for overlap:
2*(((DURi+DURe)/4)-LSA)

I found a pretty good article on overlap:

those big splits are usually for a 400 shot drag car. Any of those 3 you listed would be just fine IMO.

My 228R 112 has a pretty nasty idle to it which I love!

All good choices, you wouldn't know the difference between them.
