Knocking
This last weekend I took it up a hill quite a bit steeper that it normally sees (climbing an abandoned canal wall) I had the throttle pinned in second gear for a maximum of three or four seconds at a fairly steep angle.
I didn't miss a shift and at the top, I just backed off the throttle quickly to avoid overshooting the top. I didn't hear the motor hit the rev limiter either. It never came out of second gear
When I got back to camp, I could hear a knock at idle. When I started it the next morning to load it on the trailer, it knocked for a few seconds then was fine.
This engine has always had fairly low oil pressure despite the higher capacity pump and runs about 30-35 psi when fully warmed up. It idles at 15-20 psi when hot (on synthetic of the recommended viscosity). I've run the pee-wa out of it for the last three seasons and never any problems (about 525HP and 500 ft-lbs at the wheels)
Could I have bent a stock pushrod and the engine is noisy at startup untill the lifter takes up the slack?
Could I have collapsed a lifter?
It had barely audible piston slap at startup before - can it suddenly increase in noise?
Or do you think I've lost a rod or main bearing? Could I have starved it for oil? (I climb steep dunes with it all the time and keep it in boost for 2 or 3 times longer than climbing this short but steep hill)
Any help on getting it diagnosed would be appreciated
Thanks, Phil
