Default LS6 in a Sand Rail (Dunebuggy), need some input on engine.

Hello, this is my first post and did go through the FAQ's, but did not see anything for an off road sand car build. The car made 355RWHP and 361RWTQ. It weighs in right at 2500lbs. wet. It's currently a stock bore/stroke LS6 block and stock 241 heads. Not sure as to the cam, but idles really smooth with no lope at all, I am assuming it is stock. The intake is a Professional Products intake with a stock throttle body, stock injectors with an after market fuel pump and regulator. I have heard these intakes are crap, but wanted to hear some direct input before making any decisions as to the intake. It runs a MEFI 4B computer. I recently got the car and took it out and it was a complete turd, pulled decent on the top (above 4800rpms), but could not get out of its own way on the bottom. So when I got back home, I took it to a good local tuner(they have done my past rails with great results and are highly respected around San Diego, CA.) They ran the car on the dyno and it was running a 14.4 A/F with 305 RWHP and 310 RWTQ. They re-tuned the car to its current state of 355RWHP and 361RWTQ( i have attached the dyno sheet). I took the car back out to the desert and it is still a complete turd. Anyways, this car needs more power. After driving it, if it has the claimed 355RWHP, then it needs atleast 430-475RWHP. To get these types of numbers i was think about doing a head, cam, intake, throttle body, injectors and roller rockers. This car ofcourse does not need streetability. We run pretty much WFO or off. I do want the car to have a good amount of toqure and needs good mid range cause the sand dunes do rob a lot of power. I was looking at a few items, such as: Edlebrock 71393 intake(i like the looks and would fill up my engine area nicely) any feedback on these intakes? I see a lot of people like the FAST intakes and I have no problem running one but the edlebrock is priced right and looks good. I was also looking for good head and cam ideas. I like the price of the stage 2 Patriot 243 heads. How would these work compared to my stock 241 heads(I know alot more flow, but for the type of driving I do I am not sure if these are right). As far as cams, what do you think? Here are some pics of the car and current engine set up. Thanks for any input in advance.

Yeah I would say get a good set of heads and a decent cam in there and you will be doing much better as far as numbers go.

As far as the intake, you will hear numerous opinions about it both positive and nuetral, but the way I see it, if it is working for you now, spend the money on something else.

What type of gearing does that thing run?

Damn, I didnt know you could have the intake on backwards like that.

I'm running the Edelbrock proflo XT in my GTO, and love it. The only problem is its a tall intake (shouldn't matter for you) and $365 is priced right. Look up Pat G and have him spec a cam out for you...I'll guess around a 224/230 on around a 108 lsa with the 241 heads. And you'll want to atleast port and mill your heads to up the flow and compression.

At 2500 lbs that thing should rip as is. I'd take a look at gearing.

If that is all it is for price might as well throw that on there too! That would look killer back there.

It also sounds mainly like a gear problem to me!
But a Small EPS cam would also help.

I really don't think you need to do anything else.

Swap that intake. A stock LS6 is better. You can do some porter 5.3 heads to bump the compression up and would make a nice combo.

So I called Texas-Speed. I ordered a 228r and LS6 stage 2.5 heads with 62cc. Yella Terra Ultra Lights plus 7.40 pushrods. I also ordered the Edlebrock 71393 intake and 90mm throttle body. Any input, is the 228r big enough for my WFO driving?

ya the 228 should be good you want under the curve power in the dunes not peak power, a 228 cam and ported 5.3 heads will do that for you. That is why you will see cars with twinscrew/roots style blowers do so well in the sand.

That cam might not make the peak power your looking for though. I would have called Ryne at CMS in Lake Elsinore, and asked his opinion he is very highly regarded and does work with sand cars also. He is a sponsor on this site.

A 5.3 truck manifold is prolly your best bet if you are specifically looking more torque...

228 is a great cam. It has good top end as long as you arent spinning to the moon. What are your shift points and limiter set to?
