If it has dished pistons it's an LQ4; LQ9's had flat tops and beefier rods for that year. Most likely it would be an LQ4 since it came out of a truck.

Yep this is correct... look at the pistons, easiest way to tell!

There was no 01 LQ9. Production began with the 02 model year.

I know there both 6.0L and the pistons are different. Is there anything thing else that makes a LQ4 different from an LQ9?

What he said! LQ9 was introducced in 2002 and put into Cadillac SUV/EXT, that year. They started to put them in Silverado SS in 2004.

There is also something about the length of the crank out of the back of the motor in some of the earlier lq4's. I can't remember what years so if somebody remembers please chime in.

99 and 00 had a longer crank to mate up to the 4L80E transmission. in 01 they started using the shorter LS1 style crank with a spacer.

I just ordered a 6.0L crank from GM... the solid "truck" crank. I wonder if Ill have any issues bolting up my flexplate/converter.
