I'm looking to getting more power out of my '00 SS I recently purchased. The car is currently at 382/370 with a tr 224 cam and supporting mods. I'm wanting to get over 400 with some porting of the heads but can't decide on wether I should port the 853's on the car or pick up some 241's and work those instead I've been told 241's are better but then I see a few guys making that number (400+) with 853's! So which way to go?

 

Look for a good used set of #243s! There getting cheaper and easy to get now.

 

853's and 241's are more or less the same casting. One is die cast one is sand cast. They will be the same when both are ported. You can hit your number on a ported 853 or 241 as long as they're done right.

 

You could have your 853 ported and make 400+ rwhp..but if i were you i would look into a set of prc or patriot heads..for the money and your rwhp asspirations you cant beat the price and performance.

 

there is a set of 799's right now in parts classifieds for 500 + rockers, rods timing chain and cam..........buy them and sell what you dont want. GREAT DEAL for anybody......

I bought patriot stg. ll 5.3's no springs just valves for $600

 

i'm payin $1300 for my stage II 243's and thats for upgraded springs, valves and of course porting. i'd say just find some untouched 243's and put those in, they'll gain you 15-25rwhp (from what i've read)

 

Not looking for a whole bunch of power, just wanting to get 400 or so. So for the money I think i'm just going to port the 853's and see how that goes. I did some reseach this weekend and found some 853 heads/cam combo's that are pretty stout for factory heads, right around where i'm trying to be on motor. If I can get 400-415 n/a + the 75-shot i'll be happy.
