Default Wondering what this object is

So I got my ws6 not too long ago and I've been trying to figure out exactly what all has been added to it. For the most part I know that it is stock except for a "catback" exhaust, but thats all the people whom I bought it from knew about the exhaust because the first owner installed it. I also noticed it has an aftermarket lid and one more thing that looked out of place next to the lid. I haven't seen this in any other pictures of engines before, so i was curious as to what it is. I'm still a noob to this Any ideas?

That hose should extend to the lid but when the wrong lid is used, the little filter is used instead.

That engine bay looks very clean in the 1st pic, looks like you got a well kept 2 owner car there, good choice on a WS6.

Yea they did keep it in very good condition. they had it from 11,000 miles (at 69000 when i purchased it) and it was a girl so thats always a plus. Overall it was in very good condition and almost completely stock which is hard to find. I didnt want to buy one that was already modded out the ***.
