Default pre-oiling after sitting

Car has sat all winter and i finally went to start it. I tried pulling the fuel relay and coils then turning it over. Oil pressure gauge sat at 0 psi. I was told by a mechanic that as long as the motor is cranking oil is going through, even though the gauge says 0. Do you guys think that this is good enough? Or i should invest in something like this

thanks

When I built my new moter I pulled the fuel pump fuse and coils, after 6-7 seconds of cranking i had 50psi of oil pressure. How long did you crank the engine over? You should see the gauge pick up pressure.

I cranked it 3 seperate times. First time about 2 seconds. Then 5, then 6 or 7. The gauge did not move at all. I should have said before the motor is a 98 ls1 out of a t/a, But it was put in an 85 olds 442. I talked to the guy who built the car, he told me i wasnt gonna be able to read pressure. I dont know if its building oil pressure or not.

I did the same thing with my new engine (new to me). I cranked mine for at least a min (off and on over a period of time). I never saw a reading on the gauge. I plugged everything up and cranked it up and all is well

thanks for the replies, anyone know if the engine is still property lubricated after cranking, even without an oil pressure reading?

I find that when I crank I get 0 but when I let off the key the pressure jumps. Don't think the gauge gets juice until the key is released. Did you have the plugs out?

The oil pump is in the crank. The oil should flow unless someone messed with the pump since the last time the motor ran or the bypass is wide open.

if the car sat all winter all i would do is change the oil and call it good, there will still be plenty of oil in all the bearings and as soon as you crank the engine over the oil will be pumping, even if the guage says 0psi.

When you engage the starter all the power is yanked from things like the gauge cluster and the radio to supply the tremendous amount of current that the starter pulls. There is a relay. Back in the day there were things called solenoids in the engine bay that performed the switching action. While cranking you won't get any oil pressure indication. I would change it, and crank for 5-10 seconds and then start her up.
