Default a little LS1 History. 1994 date code LS1

Today at work some unusual core's come up for rebuilding. I took some pictures and thought I would share. I remember reading a book on the LS1's that said the design phase started in early 1993 or so. Anyways, the oil pan and timing cover from these two LS1's both show 1994 on them.

One block has an open cam tunnel, and a hole machined in the top above the cam like the lt1 water pump drive..I wonder if they had thought about doing this in the early beginning of the LS1.

The bolt pattern for exhaust on one of them is different from today's LS1, and used non behive springs, and different retainers. Intake ports also have a notch in the top of them to clear injectors it would seam.

anyways, enjoy the attached pictures. they are large..

Odd that any early protype stuff got out. We usually don't let that stuff out after initial testing.

I'll know in next few days if I am able to get them. We obviously won't be building them. They come in misidentified from core supplier as 01-02 LS1's.

Neat, a non-roller LS timing set. Looks like the deck surface is not connected in-between cylinders, (90's cadillac aluminum engines are similar). I think its pretty cool that some stuff is largely unchanged (main caps, rods/pistons, rocker arms), and what is also kinda different is that pans looks almost exactly like the C6 Corvette pan.

The one oil pan has a broken temp probe on it. Too bad you don't have the water pump, it would be interesting to see if it truly was designed to be reverse flow. Hard to tell without the WP.

That is very cool. I guess we dont have dates on our timing covers? I have never noticed it in all the cams I swapped, but it was probably just because I was thinking: "Finally, last stupid bolt!" and just tossed it to the side.

If it were me. I would clean all that stuff up and just put it together as a display. House art.

If you guys would dig a little deeper, you would find the answers you seek...

Under his profile Farmington shows:

Occupation
Prototype machinist for GM

The "We" is likely referring to a GM powertrain engineer or something along those lines. Farmington is for Farmington Hills, MI which is Metro Detroit, and that is where GM does a lot of prototype R&D.
