Default Which cam for me?

Im finally in the market to buy a cam probably in the next two weeks so help me out here I've got few suspension mods, 2.73 gears/automatic, tcissf3500, patriot 5.7unmilled S2 heads I could care less about emissions and my drive to work is only 1.5miles so thats not an issue as it will just gimp there in the mornings anywayz...I've been thinking of TSP's 231/237 cam just on a 114 for my auto but I want some other opinions...some have said to go smaller because of my gearing but who knows if 6 months from now I'll have a 12 bolt with some 3.73's so i dont wanna undercut myself now. Also this isnt a track car per say I just wanna know I can trap 117-120 in the 1/4 and have a nice lopey *** idle(not big on stealthy) I will be getting tuning done and I know i can get the tsp cam to work fine in there, but if anyone has anything they like to offer id like to hear about it...I dont really wanna go with a custom cam but then again its not like alot of auto guys have ever used the one in question...at least i havent read about them. Anyways tell me what you think.

If you are planning on changing the gears down the road and maybe going to a little larger stall.. I'd do the TSP231/237. .but not with those 2.73's and 3500 stall. If you want something milder for your gears and stall.. maybe their TSP224R cam or a step up from it would be their TSP228.

2001 Red Coupe Bandit has ran some pretty stout times with his 228 cam.

what about the 231/231 cam would that still be too much you think? The stall is difinitly stayin...the gears like i said only if i go to a 12 bolt.

Bill,

Our 231/237 camshaft will work just fine with your SSF 3500 as far as driveability is concerned. However, with your 2.73's, it's going to be dropping quite a bit below its powerband on the shifts. With 3.73's and your 3500, you'd have shift extensions somewhere around 5,000 RPM. That would work out pretty well for you. What are your shift extensions at now? The 231/231 would be a great cam, too, but it's still going to be a healthy cam for the 2.73:1 gearing. Also, if you're not at the track a lot, the 12-bolt might be wasted money. I went a best of 1.44 60' on the 10-bolt in my '02 SS, and we went 1.43 60' in our '98 TSP Project Z28. Granted, it will eventually break, but I feel that your money will be better spent on other parts. We have a complete gear package upgrade for $399.99 for your 10-bolt with your choice of 3.42:1, 3.73:1, or 4.10:1 gearing.

Feel free to give us a call or shoot us an e-mail if you have any other questions. We'll be glad to help you out. FYI, we have both the 231/231 and 231/237 in stock and ready to ship.

my shift extensions are around 4600-4700 and like i said i really dont want to do a cam swap twice if i dont have to and for the price its a great deal I got used to the big stall with the shitty gears pretty quick so i think i can learn to live with some shitty low end tq too Thanks Trevor

LOL You have a positive outlook on the situation. I agree that it's best to only do the swap once (once in a while is more like it with my car!), and the driveability will be fine with your 3500. If you can live with the 2.73:1 gears, then I say go for it. It ought to be pretty crazy on some highway punches.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
