Default Balancing a rotating assembly....

Going to have the rotating assembly balanced next week and wanted to get some opinions.

I've heard that the stock bottom ends are balanced without the flywheel/clutch assembly. Is this true? I spoke with one local shop and he said I needed to bring the following:

Crank
rods
pistons/rings
wrist pins/locks
balancer
flywheel/pressureplate

This goes against what I've read in the past, so is this guy right, or should I correct him? Are the LS1 rotating assemblies internally balanced, or do they require counterweights on the flywheel and crank pulley?

well, you really should have them balanced as well. just like the DS, and anything else in there that rotates.

perhaps they are balanced seperately, but have it done none the less.

They probably just want to check them. The harmonic balancer and flexplate/flywheel should be zero balance - the balancing is all in the rotating assy - but to be 100% sure the balancer and flywheel/flexplate doen't throw things off, they may want to check them.

The LS1 engines are internally balanced and you do not need to have the balancer or flexplate present during balancing. All you need to bring them is the internal engine parts, i.e pistons, rods, rod bearings, rings, wrist pins, locks and of course the crank. If your machine shop hasn't done that many LS1's they are probably just trying to cover there bases and have yuo bring everything. Good luck.

Thanks everyone! That confirms what I thought (internally balanced) I've got everything all set and ready to go then. Picking up the block tomorrow and dropping off the rest of the rotating assembly.

I'm hoping to have a running motor by the first week of Feb!
