fuel pump setup

Cool fuel pump setup

I put a 5.3 ls1 in my 1969 land crusier, rock krawler. I decided to use the stock gas tank and had a baffle installed in the center of the tank were the fuel pump would be the closest to the bottom. The gas tank than sat in my garage as i built the rest of the rig. Which was about 2 years! My first trip out in woods my fuel filter gets plugged from rust in the tank that i never noticed! Which grew over the 2 years. The fuel pump than doesnt last the rest of the day. I replaced the pump and cleaned the tank. And the dang pump goes out again! popping the fuse to the relay! I have a third pump in it now and am timid to take it out again. My question is do I have something setup wrong? How far from the bottom of the gas tank should the pump be?

I have been trying to research about this and one thing that I have heard about is pump not having proper voltage; not saying that this is your problem but had heard of it causing issues for others. I am trying to figure out stuff to set on a ls style engine into my cj7 eventually.

What pump assembly did you use? The pump its self MUST be cover in fuel at all times or it burn up. If you use the gm fuel bucket assembly you should have any trouble.

I have check voltage and it is good, 14.6 when running and battery voltage of 12.4. The fuel pump mounts in a very similar setup as a stock gm one. Just no plastic basket around the pump. But, when the tank gets half empty the pump would be starting to be exposed. So, if or when the rig is on a hill side all the gas would be to one side and fully expose the pump. Except for what is in the sump that surrounds it.!
