Default Do you HAVE to pull oil pan for pump install ?

I'm in the process of putting a new cam package in my car and also bought a new LS6 oil pump. My question is am I going to find that I HAVE to get the motor up a little and pull the pan to install the new pump ? If I find that maybe I don't have to am I still going to be able to install correctly and make sure I don't have o-ring fitment issues with the pick-up ? Thanks!

Me too. I'm more nervous about this than any other part of my upcoming cam swap. I have a ported LS6 pump sitting in my garage ready to go, but I'm still debating sticking with my stock 130k mile pump that seems to be working just fine.

You don't have to pull the pan to install the pump, just take your time and make sure things go in properly or you don't drop something and are forced to pull the pan to retrieve it.

No you don't have to pull the pan. Just loosen the bolts and let the pan hang down in the front that will allow you to get the bolt out of the bottom of the pump. A ratchet wrench definitely comes in handy for this. Be sure you get the pick up tube centered back in the pump when you reinstall it.

Thanks everyone!

Hey Jon, so you don't think the pan will leak after it's tightened back up with not changing the gasket or anything ?

My only recommendation is to stuff a clean rag in the pan just behind the pump that way if you do drop the bolt, it can't go far. I learned this the fun way. I got lucky and didn't have to remove the pan to retrieve the bolt.

Like someone have said, drop the pan, stuff a rag under the pick up tube, unbolt the pick up tube, not all the way but most of the way. Turn it by your hand to loosen the bolt and carefully take it out. When putting back together, especially the bolt for the pick up tube, center it w/ the O ring already in place, torque to spec and then torque it with a small wrench just a smudge (not too much).

Be watchful with the O ring not to pinch it when torquing the bolt in.

Nah it shouldn't. The stock gaskets w/ the rubber inserts usually seal up pretty well. I would put a little black RTV in the corner-top side of the gasket where the block and front cover come together. If it is going to leak, that's where it will be. The RTV will seal it up.

when i did my cam/oil pump swap, i found that a 10 mil. swivel head racheting wrench will become your best friend to get the pickup tube bolt off..and like ^^^^ said, hold on to that bolt with your life..loland dont forget the 2 bolts that hold the trans to the bottom of the oil pan, ive heard of people not taking them off and askin why the hell the pan wont drop ::rolls eyes:: good luck
