Question Porting 241's???

Realistically what would I gain from some ported 241's? My cousin has a extra set that he's gonna give to me and I plan on getting them ported and slapping them on. I plan on doing another build in a couple years so i'm not looking to add tfs, afr, prc, 243's, or any other set of heads right now cause I have other priorities at the moment.

I can get them ported fairly cheap so I figure I'd take a shot at it even if it only adds 10-15rwhp

If your not familiar with my car its a bolt on cam only auto with a little something extra

If the port work was good I would think 20 hp would be reasonable.

I have heard as much as 40 whp with a real good port job. Includes milling to raise the CR of course. If you send your heads to a place(like TEA for example) that knows exactly what theyre doing they get somewhere around 900. I called a local guy & he wanted 800 to do mine. To spend that kind of money on a port job might as well have some 243s ported or buy good aftermarket castings, which I did. I say do it if its under 400, you cant go wrong if they know their stuff with porting LS heads. I would think 20 whp easy. I have seen some very good prices on some ported 241s on ebay. Some head porting shop lists them, they looked really good too. I dont know of anyone thats bought a set of the ebay heads.

id say 20 is well within reason...

Stock 241's flow 236 @ .600.
Advanced Induction ported 241's flow 285 cfm @ .600.
Stock 243's flow 265 cfm @.500 lift and fall off to 260 @ .600
Advanced Induction ported 243's flow 300 cfm @ .600

*Edit*

dont think a 300 dollar port job will get you close to 285 cfm, but probably 260-270 range anyways. stock 243's can be had for that same price too... but since you got the 241 heads for free, your basically getting the same hp per dollar spent in the end. Id say do it!

A $300 port job probably won't pick up much power unless you're found somebody out there that doesn't think their work is worth any money.

FWIW, I picked up 40rwhp from a set of ported 241's from A.I. with stock valves, milled .018.

Post was edited, $750 port job. Personally, I would NOT sink that much money into 241s.

Not trying to rain on your parade at all. I just feel like for that much money it might be better towards a better casting head.

I agree, @ 750.00 i would wait and put the money into something else. Just think AI ported 241's cost around a grand and will net 35-40whp... but prc stage 1 ls6 heads will net 50whp+ for roughly the same money. Thats why not many mess with 241's unless they can get somebody to port them for next to nothing, or you are skilled enough to do it yourself...

241's are fine. They're only major draw back in CC size. A properly ported 241 will make 30-40rwhp.

I have a customer with a proven set of A.I. ported 241's. They made 40rwhp with STOCK VALVES. Get with Ron/Phil @ A.I. and they'll give you a porting job worth paying for, and worth using the 241's. Phil can also mill your heads exactly to specs according to camshaft profile.

Big compression with smaller chamber heads is great, but it's not the end all/be all to making power like the internet says.

I am fairly new to the LS community, so I can't say what 241s would do performance-wise compared to 243s, but it comes down to this: you have 241s, for $999, you can go to TEA or AI and you KNOW you will receive a top quality set of heads in return that have all the tweaks and tricks done, good valve springs properly set up, etc. If you HAVE to have 243s, but have no cores, then a set of ready mades from one of the sponsors would be okay. I personally have used TEA twice in years past, and their quality and customer service have been top of the line. I am sure TEA and AI know exactly how much to mill from the heads to generate maximum compression while staying well within piston to valve clearance and without causing head to intake issues.

I agree... my point was you will have the same money tied up into a 241 as a 243(roughly) and end up 10-15whp less...thats all. Ai 241's make good power tho... heck anything Ai does lol.

$750 for port job on LS1 241s is too much

that's why you can get :-

1. Used stock 243 with stock valves/ springs for $450-$500

2. New stock 243s with stock valves / stock springs from GMPartsDirect PN#12564824 for $860 pair

3. PRC LS6 stg 1 or Patriot LS6 stg 1 $1000-$1100

if i was you i would look for a used set of prc on here i found a set of prc stage 2s for 800 with prc spings good for a .650 lift. But if you want there is a craigslist post by me that is selling a set of 241s.he said they flow at 300 cfm fresh and he wants $700 maybe that will be good for you and keep an extra set of 241s check it out.

if the person working on the heads really knows what they're doing, you can have a really nice set of 241's. i've got a set of 241's that flow 300cfm at .600 and 305cfm at .650 with a 2.02 intake valve... so you can really get them to flow if the proper time goes into them.. i have about $1,000 in mine though, so that's a bit more than you may be looking to spend
