Default 99 Z28 Rebuild

Friday I was driving my Z28 and it just shut off and the Tach went to zero. I pulled it over and it would crank but not start. I took it home and I had a code P0343 Cam Position Sensor High Voltage.

I replaced the Cam Position Sensor and it still will not fire. The Fuel Pump is working. I guess the next thing to do is check the wiring. Any other ideas?

Thanks,

Brian

I had this problem a while back but it ended being the cam sprockets bolts that got lose put loctite on the bolts and problem went away but check your wiring first then take it from there good luck

I will check the wiring, but I already fixed the loose cam bolts a few months ago.

I replaced the Water Pump at the same time since I had it off.

I wonder if the timing chain could have went.

Did you check your basics? fuel? Spark? Compression?

To check for timing chain problems you can.....

Get a scope and look for a wave form to assure the timing chain is not broken.

Compression check to see if the chain is broken.

Pull the cover.

My brother had a similar problem with his '01 Z28. He got home and it cut off on him, and the next day when he tried starting it, all it did was crank over and not come on. It ended up being a ground cable behind the center(stereo) console. Check and make sure all of your ground are properly connected.

I would just check to see if youre getting crank signal first, thats the easiest thing. If you try to crank it and the tach stays on zero its crank position sensor

correct me if im wrong here but if the timing chain broke would he not have a whole lot more problems that were much more obvious. I.E. noises from the motor, bent valves, other horrific noises from the engine bay?

^^^^^^^^Not really because the valves are not going anywhere if the TC is broken. When the TC broke on my old 79 T/A the motor spun over fast when you tried to start it because the starter has only pistons to move not the valvetrain.... I guess I was lucky as I suffered no collateral damage when mine broke.

and have you worked on the starter/flywheel lately? its easy to pinch the crank sensor wires in the starter/heat sheild. and it would behave as you describe. Tach moving? (as stated above)

the crank sensor wiring also likes to find its way to header tubes as well

If you have spark, you have a tach signal. Not to mention you would have a code for the tach as well.

I switched the relays around and it did not change a thing. I am in the process of tearing the motor down to get to the timing chain. I think that might be the problem. While it is apart I am going to replace the timing chain with the new LS2 one I already have, replace the camshaft, pull the heads and have them worked over, and add a LS6 Intake.

btw the tach needle moves just not much.
