Default solid roller?

What is the difference in a regular motor and a solid roller? Also what do you need to build one. Is there a big HP difference withe a solid roller. thanks

It's mostly in the usage of the camshaft and lifters. Normal hydraulic rollers are found in the cars stock. Solid roller lifters basically don't require oil pressure to keep them in contact with the camshaft, generally speaking. You can run more aggresive ramp rates then a hydraulic, don't have to worry about valves or lifters floating due to the oiling, etc.

So far there isn't a huge difference in our use of solid rollers versus hydraulic. The main issue there is there are so few advances in the solid roller numbers because it's more expensive to switch over to. Most of the shops prefer to work with the hydraulics. They are easier to work with and much easier to sell to the general public. Solid roller motors require the owners to set the valve lash on occasion. That's something that the hydraulic lifters eliminate the need for and makes nicer for people that don't like to wrench on their cars on scheduled intervals.

Good explanation DERTY, the main diff. the engine sees are faster ramp rates on the cam lobes which opens and closes the valves quicker filling the cylinders more effectively. This is not your everyday driver package as it requires maint. under the hood which most like to stay away from on the LS1.
