Got the call back today and stating that the vibration is because the car is running on 7 cylinders instead of 8. $250 to fix the issue.. i noticed someone mentioned a misfire which is what he said also.. Depending on the cylinder that is misfiring.. is $250 resonable..
That all depends on what it needs. If it is a dead wire or plug, that is about 2x what it should cost. If it is an injector, then that is probably about right. A bent pushrod replacement might cost about that much too. He has obviously has not diagnosed it as a valve problem because the quote would be over a grand from a shop.

I would ask him specifically what exactly is being done for your $250.

Hope that helps.

well after having the car for a few days.. they found or thought they found the issue as cyclinder #4 had a misfire.. so replacing the cap and sparkplug didnt fix the issue and moved the misfire to another cyclinder.. so since the car needed it i had all the sparkplug replaced since the car has over 150,000 Miles..and never had them changed.
I picked up the car and drove it and tested it and still has the vibration.. i had him sit in the car with me and i showed him what vibration i meant.. they are going to check it some more.. now since you mentioned the O2 sensors.. i do know that 1 of the cats on the car is bad.. i have new hi-flow cats to put in, but cat find anyone that will do it since they arent direct fit and the amount of space to work in.. which is fine.. i wanted to replace the manifolds with headers, which would move everything down under the car making it easier to install.. and with that i was going to replace the sensors anyway.. but could a bad cat be a suspect in this case?
i mean if i start the car, leave it in park.. and rev the motor up to right under 2k the car vibrates really bad.. could it be clogged cat?

Sounds like you need another shop pronto. It is obvious they do not have a clue. Somebody talented who works on these cars all the time will determine the problem quickly. I would find somebody else. Just make sure when you go to a shop that they understand from the outset that you do not intend to pay for them to replace random parts or pay ridiculous hourly diagnostic fees. If they truly know what they are doing, they will make short work of the diagnosis.

Thanks.. i have never been screwed yet by this place.. been going there for some time.. and if they cant figure it out, they wont charge me.. i will give them this last chance to make it right.. if not then ill take the car back and park it til i can find another place or have time to look at it myself some more.. i have 3 project cars and this one that i work on and only reason this one is in the shop was due to not having the time to devote time to try things out..

Leakdown/block/coolant tests need to be performed... someone above mentioned their own vibration was caused by a misfire due to head gasket.

After another week at the mechanics, talked to them today and they took the car to another shop that had equipment they didnt have and ran more tests neither shop could pin point the vibration issue. Going to pick up the car tonight at no charge.

Now let me ask a stupid question. i know that we have a bad cat on the car, i already bought hi-flow cats(universals) but need to get them installed.. by any chance, if the inside material of that one bad cat was broken and clogging the exhaust, could that cause the vibration? im sure its hard for that to happen, but back in my dad before emissions, in highschool we would take the cats off, chisel out the inside to gut them out and put back on the car so they could pass visual inspection.. im just throwing it out there, because once it gets home, it will probably sit a while before we can spend money and time on it to fix it.. and if thats something that could be wrong then ill go ahead and order the headers for the car and make the car install easier and cheaper than the stock location with manifolds.
