LS1- oil pressure?
Can any-body tell me what is the normal oil pressure on a Ls1?, I have a 01 and have 19,000 miles and it reads 5 pounds , And the dealer keeps telling me Ls1 are rated at running at 6 pounds.
Car Is stock, starts up at 40 pounds then after It warms up It (Fluxuwates)from 2 to 6 pounds and stays there.
Is this normal?

Re: LS1- oil pressure?
Normal? HELL NO. 2-6psi is unexceptable IMO. I've never seen an LS1 with a healthy motor and oiling system make less that 25psi (warm at idle) with high (80K+) miles, or 30-40psi (warm at idle) with lower miles like yours.
Something is either very wrong with your gage or you have an oiling issue.

Re: LS1- oil pressure?
I would demand to have that fixed...my car when fully warm at idle is at 40psi, and 60 at crusing, higher at WOT, my 01 motor has 15,400 miles on it....

Re: LS1- oil pressure?
it's already been stated, but I can't help myself. that is nowhere near normal. You and 40 of your closest freinds, go up to ur dealership and talk engine warranty.
on a more serious note: Demand they pull the engine, take it apart completely and inspect it for wear/tear. Ofcourse they will say no. Contact gm yell and scream at them. Now have the dealership work on ur car as many times as you can. At this point go back to ur dealership, at this point it would be cheaper for them to replace the whole motor than do the labor on it. If they still don't want to play ball, LEMON LAW, get urself a new car. Be very concerned about any damage the low oil pressure might have caused.

Re: LS1- oil pressure?
Good luck with battling the dealer - there seems to be ALOT of less than honest dealers out there that know there is a problem with the pressure valve of our pumps - call the GM HQ - 1-800# in the owners manual and log a complaint against the dealer and call another dealer - make sure its a pontiac dealer in your area and tell them the problem. Keep calling till you find one that acknowledges the problem and will fix it - call roadside assistance to get the car towed to that dealer free.

Just to make sure I got this right...2 PSI? I imagine with pressure that low, that engine would be knocking like a champ. Is it knocking at all? If not, I'd suspect that the problem may lie somewhere else...like a sender or something. That is just too low IMO for there not to be knock.

NOT. I think any chimp should know 2 - 6psi is not normal. So are you saying that when driving around, the oil pressure is 2-6psi or just at idle? Because minimum requirements for oil pressure is 6psi for every 1000rpms. If not met, you may have engine damage. I would have the gauge/sender checked first, 2psi is next to nothing and I think the lifters would fail to pump up. Which would be obvious.

Re: LS1- oil pressure?
if your motor is knocking and the Techs at the
GM dealership say that the oil pressure is normal
you need to call GM directly and DEMAND a new engine, the dealership is responsible and liable
at this point for the damage that has occured.
My motor has 88k miles and my needle flickers a little but,.....it is around 40 PSI

Re: LS1- oil pressure?
Yes you have a major problem with that engine. My engine blew after having some low oil pressure issues (sitting around 10psi after warm up), even with a new oil pump. It was consuming a hell of a lot of oil in the end. Like everyone has said, take it back and demand that they tear the engine apart and find out what's wrong.

Re: LS1- oil pressure?
man .mine"s about 18 to 20 @idle, and im gonna go to a ported oil pump ( dont want to take chances! ) my car went to the :check gauges/no oil pressure/ and knocked like a son of a bitch. there was a cam filing in the oil pump. after h/c so no warranty. and my motor was shot. it was a good excuse for a stroker but not a good experience. DO NOT TAKE THIS LIGHTLY YOU HAVE A REAL PROBLEM!!

Re: LS1- oil pressure?
Seems like I can add to this and say I have 0 oil pressure. My car was started and idled fine with oil pressure around 40-50psi(ported pump) Then about 10mins later I started it up again and the check gauges light came on. the oil pressure was at 0. So it looks like another oil pump or pressure unit for me.

Re: LS1- oil pressure?
The same crap happened to me when I 6000 miles on my SS. The dealership said that there had been a recall on the oil pump, yet they neglected to tell me that the other times I had been in the shop. Anyway, they tell me that the lifters had gone bad and that that was the cause of the knock. They told me that they would rebuild the engine and see if that fixed the problem. Needless to say, upon hearing this I hit the roof. I told them that they could do this and that I would run the damn thing so hard that it would break again. Well, after my assault of profanity they saw things my way and just replaced the whole damn engine. For God sake, z-28s and ss's are made to run like bats out of hell not for getting the kids from soccer practice. Ever since then its always been yes sir, don't worry sir we'll take care of that for you. Bottom line. DON'T LET THE DEALERSHIP DICK YOU OVER! This was before any mods mind you. Good Luck
