Is this a good idea?
Here is my dilema. I am wanting to build a 383 the end if this year, but am wanting to do a H/C combo now because i can get it tuned fairly soon. What I am thinking is I can get the heads and cam now, but setup for the rebuild later on down the road. Is this a good idea or should I just wait for the entire thing. I have no problem tearing into the motor twice either. I am going to have a lot of time on my hands this year.
If you don't mind tearing it apart twice or the extra cost (gaskets, bolts, etc.) by all means go ahead. The second tear down should be easier. I would select head/cam specs that work on the 383 as well as your current set up.
No big deal tearing into the motor twice. That's just double the fun. I built a 383 motor for my Camaro. I had a forged flat top short block built to 12:1 compression and then picked the cc of the head to bring it back down to 10.5:1. That way if I wanted to really race the motor I could just change the heads and run on race fuel. Just make sure the specs of the heads are what you want.
Let her rip dude. Just pick a cam for both motors. one thats a little big for the ls1 and pretty medium to the 383. id say 236-242 dur. range. That should drive good in a 383. as for heads go with at least 243s if not a bigger runner. Good luck with it
Thats the overall plan man. I am looking at something in the mid 240's around .600 lift on either side for both motors. As far as heads go, I was looking at something like an AFR 220 or the Trickflows that are in that range, as well as doing a FAST 96/96. I got to figure out when the tuners are coming to hawaii so i can get it all ordered and installed.
