Default the eigth didgit

I'm wanting to put an LS engine into my 1956 post, I just finished installing C-4 Corvette suspension front and rear but can't decide on which engine I should be looking for. This is just a car for crusing, I have another car for racing. All my other cars have a gen l in them and I want to crawl into the 21st century with the 56.

What is the eight didgit mean and where can I get a list explaining it?

I like the looks of the corvette, camero and gto engines but for what I plan on using the car for is the added expense justifiable, or should I stick with an engine like a LQ9 and dress it up a bit?

Any help is appreciated

The motors perform basically the same with different intake manifolds. If your going to do any sort of head or intake swap. stay with the lq. if no go ls.
