Default '98 Z28, looking for 500 crank HP.

My buddy recently came to me asking what it would take to get his '98 M6 Z28 to 500 crank HP. He's wanting to spend around the $3,000 mark and will probably be doing a lot of the labor himself, so we're just talking cost of parts.

He is wanting heads/cam, and my initial thought would be a custom ground cam with ported/polished factory heads. Again, it's an M6 car. I don't know a ton about H/C/I on the LS motors, so school me!

And he's already got a nitrous kit, don't tell me to "spray it."

What else that would need upgrading? Fuel pump, timing, injectors?

Personally i would get a custom cam (somewhere in the mid 230's) a set of ported ls6 heads (i think porting the stock heads are kinda a waste) and a fast 90 setup.

with a 12% loss from crank to wheels, you need 440 to the wheels to obtain 500 crank power. you could pick up some PRC 5.3 for 1234.99 right now from TSP, then a custom cam, gaskets and bolts install kit for another 500. then some LS7 lifters and measure for pushrods. you are just about at 2000 after tax and shipping. you should be right at your mark (assuming he already has longtubes) and if you need an intake, Pick up a used FAST 90/90 for just around 600-800 and you will be set!
