I suppose the lifter could be sitting on the crankshaft and not down in the oil pan yet....

I've heard at least one person here who had to remove the engine to get a dropped lifter out....not sure if that was necessary but it was done...

..that blows

This is how I do mine. if they can support the weight of a pushrod without falling, I'm not too worried about pulling the cam out

this is how i do it too. works like a charm. you can see if the lifter is going to fall before you ever pull out the cam.

anyway, good luck to you. i hope you can get everything back together

You can unbolt the oil pan and fish it out with a magnet. Buy the JPR tool from Thunder Racing. I was too cheap to spend $84.00 to buy the tools. It cost me $825.00 to have the heads ripped off, gaskets and bolts replaced.

$65.00 to rent a car for 2 days
$825.00 to replace the lifter
JPR cam tools...PRICELESS

How in the hell did you break your crank pulley? Did you drop it from some insane height of 30ft? Congrats on fishing out the lifter, now get everything put together and take her for a test drive.

Or you can spend less than $2.00 on the aluminum bar stock and have it work the same. I have used it on all year LS1 F-bodys.

I saw on Thunders web site that the JPR tool will not work with Comp 'R' lifters. Does that go for using the al. bar stock too?

that is wrong about the comp R lifters...it will work just the same....the lifter bodies are the same..its the internals that are different

DMAN IT! I guess I did not realize the lifters were not held in place by the lifter bores in the block . Oh well, I will just reinstall them when I am done if I have to.

That's alot of unneccesary work just for a LS1 cam swap. I've done two LS1 cam swaps without pen magnets.....
I don't care about how much work it will be to remove the heads. If I rely on those damn retainers, how much extra work would I have to do when a lifter drops into the pan?????

5/16 brake line here, I beleive I had to flatten one side of it lightly with a hammer. (D shape). Worked like a charm.

Or did he?????????

But serious question while I bump this ancient thread. The dowels, what is special about the tools that makes them different than dowels?
I looked on TR's site and they do not have a enlarged picture to show the exact shape of the tools. I am about to do a cam on my CETA and I love having the correct tools, but 100$ here and there for seldom used tools gets expensive. I have a whole box full of **** like that.
What about the spring compressor? Do any of the cheapo auto parts store rentals work worth a damn?

The spring compressor is definetly worth it. It does 2 springs at a time and is sturdy so it save alot of time and frustration. Plus you can sell it when your done if you really wanted to recoup some cost. As for the "tool" that holds the lifters up, I dont know. I used dowels

ive done probably half a dozen cam swaps which isnt that many but i never understood spending $80-100 for that JRP tool for holding up the lifters. Go to home depot, lowes, etc and buy 1-5/16 wooden dowel rod for less than a $1, cut it in half and be done.

oh and for spring compressor, theres a thread on here for tims spring compressor or something like that. I have used that same compressor on all the cam swaps and it works flawlessly and was cheap. Check that out and get it if he still makes em.

Guys, online hardware store we use at work, McMaster Carr, 2- 5/16" alum rods 36" long. Part # 6750K143 cost something like $22 plus a couple bucks to ship.
