max bore on 5.3?

Sorry for the late reply. I should subscribe to threads I participate in. Anyway....I don't do the actual sonic testing. I have a machine shop that specializes in racing engines do it for me. I've actually never witnessed the operation. I just get a thumbs up or down. I'll call and find out the particulars.

how many people have done the 5.3 bored to a 5.7? any body got an average wall thickness of a 5.3? iv done got 200 in machine work already and machine shop is saying it cant be done...... its a 1999 cast iron block.. lm7

There's a thread in this section from 2 or 3 months ago that the op talks about boring a 5.3 to the 6.0 bore and sonic checking it and he claims that the 5.3 at the 6.0 bore still is thicker than a gen1 350's walls . I would'nt do it but 5.7 for sure I would do .

I bored my 2005 L33 5.3 liter HO block out to 3.898 a few weeks ago. Checked out great. looks great. Has all the advantages of an LS6 block as described in the earlier posts. Whole motor only cost me $705 complete. I just paid $300 for cleaning, boring with a torque plate, and cam bearings though. Still.. One helluva deal. I have much more money going into it though. NOT a forged bottom end. LS6 pistons and rods. ARP rod bolts. Rods honed after. Double roller and the list goes on. MS4 cam just went in. 243 heads CAME WITH THE MOTOR STOCK. weaker valvetrain than the LS6 though.

it is my understanding that on an aluminum block you can bore it up to be a 5.7 and on the cast iron blocks you can go all the way to 6.0 and still have plenty of meat to run boost

Default GEN-IV AL BORE @ 98mm




Hi John, many here in CA./NV. use the GEN-IV AL crankcase for off road racing AFTER Sleeves are installed.
My observation, AFTER SONIC, is a MAX BORE of 98mm as common without sleeves.
I ALSO install my 4.1" forged crankshaft/forged rods/forged pistons in the crankcase. (LS-383)

Default 6.2 heads on a 5.3

Wondering if a 5.3 can stand a 4.000 bore with either a turbo or pro charger I have 6.2 heads. Blew the bottom end of my stock 6.2 after doing work to the top end and want to build something stronger
