The tool works on every year of every LS1. Only the very first batch of tools didn't work on some 01+ cars.

I use 5/16" steel rod, which I polished down with some emery cloth so it slides in nice and smoooooth... No binding up, and it works on all years without issue.

To the gent who asked how they work / where they go --- look at an install article showing the front of the motor. Behind the cam retainer plate are two holes adjacent to the camshaft. These holes go all the way to the back of the block. You slide one rod in each hole. The rod is an interference fit between the block and the notch in the lifter body, preventing the lifter from falling no matter how hard you push down on it.

gotcha

i was wondering if they somehow went under the lifters or pinned them against the side or what

the reason i asked is because ever time ive used them they slide in and out with ZERO resistance and i can even wiggle them a bit while they were in there

Ahhhh. Makes perfect sense. Kinda what I figured. So the JPR tool has the flat spot on the rod so it clears everything going in, then you twist it to tighten it up against the lifter body.

I'm going to try the 5/16" rod on my next cam swap.

Thanks,
Craig

I have used a #10 wire about 6 times and have had no problems. It slides right in and is bigger that 1/4".

Did JPR or yourself offer a replace set or something. Mine worked great on a 98 then would not work at all on my 2000. If I send them back can i get them replaced? The handle fell off of one of them while we were trying to get the tool back out of my block.

Yes I can replace the tool with the updated model. Just give me a call and I'll take care of it for you.

If you order one you will get the right tool. Only the first 10 or so tools made were of the old design. We've sold over 70 of them since then.

another thing you can do is buy some of the "hook" side of Velcro and stick it lengthwise along the 1/4" rod, this will put more pressure on the lifters, just make sure you buy the self-adhesive kind.

Aaron
