Cam and push rod question

Default Cam and push rod question

I am getting a cam tomorrow and I just heard today that some guys keep their stock pushrods incase or over revving. What do you guys think? The cam is a zl12 224/228@.050.578/.578 112 lsa from TPIS.

I wouldn't leave a weak link if I could swap ot out quick, cheap and easy

get some harden push rods.go to ls1howto.com for instructions and pics.who is tuning you car when finished with cam install?

buy new hardened pushrods, but keep your old ones for emergency spares.

Hardened pushrods are going in with the new cam but one of my friends was saying that some guys will keep stock pushrods (not sure for what size cam) incase they redlined it would break the pushrods instead of having the pushrods push through and wreck more than you would if stock rods were still there. TPIS of minnesota is doing the tuning after as well as the cam install. New springs retainers and for some reason I think he said he is going to put ARP crank bolts in too. Not sure if that is what he said but it's what I thought I heard him say. I would try the work myself but I've never done anything internal before let alone much external. Ire there is enough material on here but still.

That's a dumb thing to do. First, stock pusrhods are slightly smaller than 5/6" OD. The OD is the biggest driver for pushrod stiffness. You are introducing more spring in the valve train along with heavier springs. Not the smartest approach to a stable valve train. Pushrod flex can damage the cam, damage the rockers, damage the valves, etc.
