Another oil consumption question...
I used the search function and read a many help topic around oil consumption but needed addional info.
I have a new MTI, C5-R blocked 427 with just over 1000 miles logged. Currently I'm using Gastrol GTX 10-40 and have incorporated a catch can. I checked the oil last night and it's a qt low on approximately 500 miles.
Damn thing runs like stink and is very smooth...however, is the oil consumption normal for a new engine like this???
additionally, MTI suggested a minimum of 3000 miles before going to synthetic. is there a better weight for the breakin than i'm using???
Thanks,
Ron

It's pretty much normal. The tolerances and piston skirt to wall clearance are not as tight as stock LS1 motors so you're gonna get more blow-by on startup and other driving. On startup the rings haven't expanded yet so you're more vulnerable to blowby. Once they get warm the rings will seat more effectively and lessen the blow-by. If you haven't done so, do the LS6 valley cover mod. It REALLY helped lessen my blow-by into my catch can.
This is not a sign that should make you disappointed. These larger motors will burn more oil, nature of the beast. I'd expect you to burn about 1 qt every 1500 miles, maybe a little less, with the motor broken in.
No big deal really, as long as you're not getting smoke billowing out of the exhaust at high rpm shifts, etc you're fine. Just keep an eye on the oil level. Check it EVERYTIME you put gas in the car.
I run the Castrol GTX 10W-40, also. I'm gonna switch over to Redline or Amsoil 10W40 synthetic soon
