need some help with a head selection, lq4 based
low post count, but have been on here a while and done a TON of research, so don't be mislead:
putting together an lq4 based, n/a, carbed motor for my mustang. car should weigh around 3,100 with a th400 trans, 4.10 gears, mainly looking for track performance. but will be street driven on teh weekends.
motor is a stock lq4 bottom end
vic jr intake
proform carb
just wp and alt acc.
4500 stall approx
will eventually be doing a stroker motor and would like to re-use the heads, but not a necessity. but would like a decently stout combo for this year and maybe next.
i have no competent machine shops that can do fly cutting and i'm afraid to do it myself and mess it up.
so....
i would like to do a set of L92 heads and mill them .030 to help with compression. using a stock .051 gasket. knowing that any decent cam for top end will require some ptv issues.
if i get a custom cam made by one of teh sponsors that wont' be huge and be safe on ptv, will i be leaving A LOT on the table. or will it still make decent enough power.
or is there a proven 243 head and cam setup that would net some top end power and not require fly cutting.
lastly, do i need to suck it up, get the right tools and do the fly cutting with the right cam?
thanks for any input. i've searched a lot on what to do. and simply can't make my mind up

Get Patrick G to spec you a cam and you will be more than happy.
Actually, with a custom cam, you won't be leaving ANYTHING on the table. You will have it ALL with your specific needs.
I have an LQ4 with stock bottom end, stock LS2 243 heads, stock LS2 intake, FAST 90 TB, and a 0.041 gasket. My car is an MT6 and it makes around 370rwhp with stock cam. With a custom cam, I think that I can hit 420 rwhp and with a ported and milled heads, 450rwhp is achievable.
Good luck with your build.

thanks, i didn't wanna bother him with this question as i'm sure he gets a ton of questions that are similar.
that's my main question though, how much would i give up by limiting the lift, etc. by not fly cutting.
