It indicates the relative crankshaft position and rpm to the computer to control the igntion firing and fuel injector timing as well as misfire detection.

The crank reluctor is on the back of the crankshaft. It looks like a sprocket with flat teeth. There's also a cam reluctor that picks up cam signal. The tooth count has to match in relation to the crank reluctor. A 1X cam goes with a 24X crank and a 4X cam goes with a 58X crank.

Jon,

A 1x cam uses 3 bolts as compared to a 4x cam having one bolt correct? I have yet to get my hands on an LS2/LS3. As the LS1 uses a 24 tooth reluctor wheel.

I don't think that's the deciding factor. VVT motors use the single bolt cams...
