Default Proform 67605 valve spring tool

so i just got my proform 67605 valve spring tool in the mail. i took it to the garage to use on my 241 heads that are off the car just to figure out that this is a heads on valve spring tool. if i bolt a 1/4inch thick steel plate to the bottom of the heads and then use the tool i could remove the locks,,, this wont do any damage to my valves right?
(the valve are going to press against the steel plate and allow me to remove the locks)

That process should not harm the valves, but I would be concerned about protecting the surface of the heads.

spring texas... thats where im from, great place
i was gonna stick some cardboard inbetween the head and the steel plate before bolting them together... also im not overly concerned with the head mating surface simply becase i am going to have the heads slighly milled when im done with my port work.

sounds like you got it figured out - but just FYI (and for anyone else looking) this is a great tool that makes the job really easy, and does not damage the valves or head surface.

You over thought that by a long shot..... Compress the spring ( I realize the valve will go with it), once the spring is far enough down, flip the head around and tap the valve and it will pop right out. Bolting a 1/4 steel plate to the head is somewhat excessive and a waste of time IMO.
