how do i measure clearances?

Default how do i measure clearances?

most of my posts involve clearances or something involving lengths and strokes. could anyone just explain how to do the math myself? im working with a 2000 stock block and stock crank. im trying to use 6.348 rods that are .250 longer than stock (got them cheap). so in order to do this what is required? or just resell them and buy some 6.100 length rods? also my heads are milled .020. like i said my main question here is how do i measure these things myself so i know everything will fit and can stop asking?

Hey dude how's it going ? I think You're best bet would be to Google something like "Chevy LS1 deck height , compression height measuring" and click on Wikipedia or whichever 1 You want , all the info should be in there except certain aftermarket products which You'll have to look to their websites or suppliers . There is some good info out there You just have to find it .

yea, ive got the book "Building the Chevy LS engine" but how much clearance do i need, say between the piston top and head? my heads are shaved 20k, so im basically wondering if 6.100 rods would be too much. stock is only 6.098, so thats only .002 longer. and if its a tad too long, would valve releifs in the pistons be applicable? these are the rods im looking at, i returned the 6.348 rods i bought for obvious reasons.

Sell those rods and get a standard LS1 6.125" H-beam and a set of LS1 pistons also setup for that rod, and you'll be ahead. I have not seen any shelf stock pistons setup for that rod length on standard deck height blocks (only tall deck).

so i can use 6.125 on the stock crank with shaved heads? and will that require dished pistons, or?

I run a 6.125 Compstar rod and stock crank. You just need a piston with a smaller compression height and no they won't have to be dished. Just depends on what C/R you are shooting for. A shaved head has nothing to do with how far the pistons comes out of the hole. The valves will be closer on a shaved head but that is what valve reliefs are for. PTV clearance also depends on how big a cam and what rocker ratio you go with as well.
