98 ls1 block????

Smile 98 ls1 block????

My 1998 Trans am has 196,000 miles and still running strong. I want to start buying internal parts to rebuild it but my friend told me that my block cannot be honed or bored because its a 98... Is this true or should I buy a lq4 complete short block and swap my top end of my ls1 lmk thanks for any input

wait till it blows, then buy a stroker shortblock. Why pay for nothing if it runs strong?

I'd be more concerned about the rod bolts than the block.....

Can the rod bolts be replaced with just the oil pan off?

Your friend is kinda right about the block. The sleeves are very thin (as they are on all aluminum LS blocks) and can't take much more than a clean up hone. Also, some oiling and crankcase breathing improvements were incorporated into the LS blocks starting in 1999.

Having said this, if there's nothing wrong with this block, there's no reason to replace it if you do a re-build.

Pfffft...if you decide that it's too much of a POS to keep, I'll take it off of your hands for $50. @ $50 I am way over paying for such a pile of crap, LOL.

Keep it, hone it, put in new rod bolts (must re-size/check rod/main bearing celarance when this is done) & then run it for another 200+K.
