Gen iii 383build
I am getting ready to bump my 5.3 to a 383 i hear it can also go to a 393 but which is going to be more reliable
what is the best set up to go with for either build.
I see their are kits to do this but can't it be pieced together from other engines or different suppliers
any help would be great as i am a old school builder and not to familiar with the new stuff

But if you insist on the 5.3L, keep the motor to a 4.0 crank. Many sponsors here carry complete forged kits.
Keep in mind you'll need better heads than the 5.3L in any case. My advice is put it on paper and price it first before you pull the trigger.

I have the 5.3 with full wiring and am looking to build it
i got a great deal on the lm7 engine.........300 for the entire assembly including harness so i am going to stick with this engine but the concern is which way to go because not many people have a 393-6 build here on the forums

That is because with the longer stroke, the pistons will reach to far down in the bore and this results in oil burning.
The main question should be: What budget do you have available?
Because instead of paying for a long stroke crank, you could find a reasonably priced 3.622 crank and have a 5.7L. Then you put the $$ saved into a good set of heads and make more power than a 382/383 with shitty heads. The stock 5.3L heads will not support the extra cubes unless professionally ported (which cost $$).

I can take a 5.7 crank and make this into a 5.7....sounds good
i am not to worried about machine work as i have full access to a shop at no charge this is why i am looking into a bigger cubic inch engine
as far as heads i am going to open these stock heads and flow them for fun......but i am looking into a set of afr or something like that and open them up even more also
so i guess in a nut shell i am not having to pay for shop expense so i want to put that money into a great deal on parts for internals

I thought the 5.3 had the same stroke just smaller bore, actually I'm shure of this. If you have access to the machine shop bore it to the 5.7's 3.893 bore and find a nice used set of pistons and rods. I've heard to have the block checked for strength to bore that amount. Stock bore is 3.779 FYI. Then cam, heads, intake and run it. If you want forged internals go for the oversized ls1 pistons and go that route, .005 more I believe is common and could probably find them if you look used.
