Default Could the engine still be good as is?

i have a 400ci iron block pontiac v8 from a project car im working on, its been sitting outside (covered of course) but its been outside for a few years not in running order. when it was in the car it ran well though.

my question is once i have the rest of the car up and running is it safe to fire the engine up again or should i tear the whole thing apart and rebuild the entire engine. my thought is that rust may have formed inside the cylinders and they might need some work after sitting out for so long.

thoughts and ideas?

Yup! If it's "tight", you might want to to pull the plugs and shoot some penetrating oil in the bores...
