Springs keep breaking

I got the g5x3 cam specs 234 242 .600/.610 112 lsa, and i have patriots duel gold valve springs .650 max lift. The flat parts on the bottom of the springs keep breaking around 1cm long. Can i still drive around the car like that? And anyone have any idea why they break? Thats in advance

3rdCoastPowerSports 10-21-2011 06:37 PM

can you take and post pics of the breakage... would help us know if you are ok to drive or not

outkast6991 10-21-2011 06:53 PM

1- i wouldn't suggest driving around on ANY kind of broken spring

2- do you know the installed height, distance to coil bind, correct seats, ect?

are you running a 5/16 pr?
assuming the springs are installed correctly it could be pr deflection

mikemunoz 10-21-2011 07:09 PM

outkast how do i go about finding out if it a 5/16pr?

Measure the OD of the pushrod with a caliper or micrometer.

this may be a really stupid question, but are you sure you are using the correct spring retainers?

3rdCoastPowerSports 10-21-2011 08:30 PM

post pics of broken springs on the head so we can see and not guess

outkast6991 10-21-2011 08:47 PM

visually looking at a broken spring tells you jack shit. if you pull the springs off the locks and valve stems can tell you a story though (if you know what your looking for)

Outkast has been here since 2004. You've been here since a few months ago.

no problem here brother and i sincerely hope you didn't take my post as an attack at ya. i'm far from an expert but i'm lucky to have some very smart people throw some knowledge at me here and there. the best part about a forum is you can help people out and look to get help when you need it too. sorry for any drama in the OP's thread

Usually if your breaking spring tips its due to not enough rate for your application. How many RPM's are you spinning the engine? usuing stock valves or larger, what material? Who's rocker arms do you have?

Without knowing the rest I cannot say for sure but like I said usually broken tips is due to not enough spring.

You can drive like that but be aware those tips are going to go somewhere, so if you dont know where they are eventually they will make it to the oil pump.
