If it was lifter roller needles I would say that would be more noticeable than rocker needles but I could be wrong . I took my rockers off and spot welded the needle bearing caps 3 spots on each side ,,,,,,,,,,,,I used thin metal to cover as much of the cap/open area that You can see the bearings through where I was'nt spot welding , then readjusted for the next weld and so on ,,,,,,,,,out of 16 rockers ,,,,,1 or 2 took a few to work the little bit of spatter that always makes it's way into spots You don't want , but they all are free rocking again as they were before . I would say the only way to make sure You get all the needles out is to at minimum take the oil pan off ,,,,,and rocker covers and pressure wash the ____ out of it . Good luck

When mine failed it was painfully obvious. Sounded like someone was tapping on the engine with a pick hammer.

Could the sound be described as a metal rattling/hammering noise under load?

Does it get quieter/go away with driving? (seems unlikely to me..)

I can't get the sound my car makes on a good recording. This is the closest I've came to capturing the noise:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YN98awbhxwM

I took my valve covers off and didn't find anything weird, and I've never found anything in the pan, but one of the previous owners could have swept it under the table of sorts.

I would think.. your car wouldn't be running right at all if you were missing bearings from lifters or rockers..?

i think my motor sounds EXACTLY like that...but to me it sounds like rod knock..would the rockers doing this cause loss of oil pressure if its doing it real bad?

I think all the LSx series engines still have the un-captured needle bearing design. See photos in these links:

... that's failed rocker arm bearings in an LS7. Notice how the flimsy sides of the bearing tears open and all the needles fall out ... then show up in the oil pan.

I have piston slap, but I don't think I have rod knock. I've driven 5k miles on this motor with these noises. No metal shavings in the oil.

now it does have some consumption, and it has a leaking RMS, AND the oil smells like gas, coupled with hesitation, which I think is a bad pump or coil or something but that's neither here nor there.

I would think.. if you had something restricting oil flow, that oil pressure would go UP instead of down yes?

my oil pressure is constant at 38-40 when warm. When cold it's closer to 50.

No, bad rocker bearings have no influence on oil pressure. A spun crank or cam bearing will have an effect on oil pressure!

True ... if you had something restricting oil flow down stream of the oil pressure sensor, then you would see an increase in oil pressure because the positive displacement oil pump is still trying to cram the same oil volume down the more restrictive path.

Low oil pressure is an indication of bad bearings that have greatly increased their clearance.

I JUST put a rear mount turbo on it and after horsing it around for a while the noise has been getting worse and oil pressure is lower than normal
