Default first ls1 comes with problems...

I recently bought a 2001 ss camaro that has a vortech supercharger on it.

the car smokes alot and has no power.

is it possible this is just cause of bad rings? starting next week i'm planning on doing a tear down of the engine but want to know what i'm getting myself into... I just bought this car and dont have alot of info on it. I called vortech and they didnt give me much to work with.

any input is greatly appreciated!

Do a leakdown test on it to see how well everything seals. This test will tell you quickly if the rings or valves are not sealing.

You can also do a compression test, which will show if the rings are bad.

This is just a possibility, check your pcv valve and see if its stuck, mine was and caused my car to smoke like a doser. I thought it was blew all the hell because one day i just went outside and it smoked even at a idle. I took the pcv valve out and shook it and whiped it off and it completely stopped. Just something to try.

Well number 1 and 7 cyl have 20 psi the rest are 150-155 and 1 and 7 plugs are covered in oil. I'll do leak down later today... I really hope it's not a bad valve or valves

Do you mean you hope it is a valve or valve seal? I'm gonna say the procharger got the best of it. How many miles are on the motor?

I'd rather it be the bottom end vs something with the heads.... the car has 70k on it. I bought it in this condition but I was hoping I was gonna get away with honing the cylinders and putting new pistons rings and bearings in the bottom end and it would be fine. I'm guessing that the procharger's boost destroyed the rings and i'm not sure how many miles its been on the car...

If your gonna leave on the procharger you might want to look into a forged rotating assembly or maybe go back N/A and sell the procharger.

You can get a set of forged piston and rods for around $1200 for a nice set. Wisecos run about $750 for pistons and rings, and rods are around $500. Run stock crank, good bearings and throw her back together.

why would I need forged pistons and rods? I read all the time that these bottom ends are good up to 1000 hp. I'm gonna pull the engine hone the cylinders and put new pistons bearings oil pump etc and then get it tuned asap. I'm thinking that the tune that was on it wasnt right. the plugs look pretty bad.

Put some brake fluid on the cylinders that are really low. If the compression goes up then u have bad pistons or are using way to thick oil.

you guys dont think that the stock rods will hold the vortech charger? the issue i'm having now is most likely rings and or pistons from boost i'm assuming... pulled the trans today and will start on the engine tonight or tomorrow.

I would think stock rods with ARP fasteners would be good to at least 600hp what are your goals for your car.

mainly just run that vortec charger. Since the engine is coming apart I'm thinking about putting a bigger cam in it. any suggestions of what to run?
