Default How do i remove 12 point ARP head bolts?

I feel liek a complete idiot, but I dont want to screw anything up. I am tearing my engine down and it has these.

I see they have an allen head in the middle, is that important? A 12 point 10 mm doesn't fit on very snug and worries me so I haven't put much torque on them. I have searched and cant find anything, could I get a little help?

Try a different size. They may have a Standard size nut

3/8 is too big and 5/16 is too small. Of course I don't have a 9 mm 12 point, only 6 point. On my way to grab one of those.

Those are actually studs, not bolts, so the 12 pt socket will remove the nut and the an Allen will remove the stud from the block.

For those, a 3/8" usually works well. I'm surprised it's too loose.

Like KCS said, if those are the standard LSx ARP head stud kit the small 5 studs are 3/8" SAE. ARP head stud nuts are SAE sizes. The head bolt kits are metric.

Thanks guys, they were 3/8 I just had used a crappy socket on them. Switched out for a newer 3/8 and it worked.

Most 12 point nuts take a wrench that matches the thread size. EG: 12 point nut for a 3/8 inch bolt will take a 3/8 inch wrench.

You really shouldn't have to worry about the allen heads. The studs are to be installed just hand tight; the torque is applied to the nut. If you tighten the stud you risk cracking the block if you go too tight. I'm assuming that the allen head is there just to assist you in getting them out if they've been in there for awhile and are a little stuck.

And wow...I thought my intake ports were dirty with oil residue

You might want to consider hooking up an oil catch can when you put your engine back together. Even on a fresh engine, you will still get a little oil residue blow through.

3/8" 12 pt usually works fine on ARP's.

And it looks like somebody needed a catch can about 100,000 miles ago...
