Default Some fly cutting info

I am sending my heads to AI to be ported next week and having a custom cam matched for my set up. I was told that he can give me the best cam without having to fly cut but that if I chose to fly cut he can give me the best match up that would give me 10-12 more hp bc he can get my CR much higher.

I did some research on fly cutting and read its not that difficult and my builder said he has never done it before but said he should be able to with no problems. My question is to those who have done it before or has paid someone to do the work. If you have done it before how much would it cost me for everything to do the work and was it fair easy for you or if you paid someone to do the work how much did they charge for the work?

I live in north jersey so if anyone knows a shop in my area that does the work please send me their info as I may consider hiring them to do the work for me.

Or should I just keep things simple and have the spec out a cam that will clear and sacrifice the extra 12 hp.

Thanks

If the heads are going to be milled at all, make sure you use those heads for flycutting. Flycutting is very crude and dirty imo. I have done it several times. It is sucessful, but time consuming. Large cam motors with milled heads usually means not enough valve radial clearance, but runable depth clearance. I charge atleast $200 to do it. 12hp is a BIG deal to some people. I would suggest specing something out that WILL NOT require flycutting imo.

Thanks for your response Joe. I am on the fence about it by more on the safe side. Yea 12 hp would be great but like you said it seems to be a lot of work although I think $200 is well worth spending if I decide to go that route.
