i am am in the process of degreeing my 228r in my lq4 with no heads on. i understand that you wanna keep the lifter roller in line with the cam lobe. but with the plastic lifter retainer in the lifter stick in the up position as its is designed to do. just wanna see what suggestions you guy have before i sacrifice i retainer by filling it to the point they do not hang up.

With the heads off, just dont install the trays. Go directly off of the lifter, install it with the roller wheel the correct way. It wont twist during the degreeing process.

that was my first thought.but wont the lifter turn throwing off the readings? ill try and see what happenes

I filed a tray and did it that way then without the tray. It was easier without the tray.

Turning it over by hand with no spring pressure will not be an issue. Even if the lifter spun 360° it wouldn't throw off any numbers as the OA height will remain the same.

ok good to know. this is first time doing it with no heads on. since i have yet to get them. so just wanna be sure.
