Default is this sound normal**vid inside**

trying to decide if this is just the noisy sewing machine sound that ls1's make or if it's something to worry about. just some info it does this when cold but after about 5 or 10 min to warm up it stops and quiets down.

That sounds like your accessory belt tensioner is weak. I think you will find that your belt will start squealing in time when cold. Just my thoughts as It sounds like mine did.

i was thinking maybe piston slap but i read somewhere that these cars are particularly noisey with a sewing machine-like sound. and when it warms up it goes away which could explain very slight piston slap if the rings are heating up and expanding to make everything fit right

I have the so called sewing machine noise after a heads and cam swap, but it def doesn't have that ticking noise that you got...I would pull the valve covers and at least make sure All the rockers are torqued properly...if not that either a bad lifter, wrong pushrods length, or it could be piston slap, but if piston didn't slap before it prob is in the. Valve train.

Is that safe to do? Run the car with no alternator or water pump or harmonic balance?

Yes, it's ok to run it for a bit belt free to isolate your noise.
I wouldn't drive it anywhere but a few moments will not hurt anything.

The balancer doesn't need a belt to turn, it turns everything else.

Yesterday you showed us a vid with car running....have you pulled all that off since then without taking the time to just take off the belt & firing it up?

WHY! should I read the thread? I was the first to reply to your thread & gave you a heads up to my thoughts...

But hey, you've started to strip it...You've pulled of a few things...better take of the oil pump, it might be the squeak, it may need lubricating

ok my bad dude. i reread my post and that did kinda come off as a *****. really didn't mean for it to come off like that. i'll take off the belt tomorrow and see if the problem persists. that should tell me if the noise is really from inside the engine or not. i really am appreciative of the tips. i know we're all just trying to help each other out. im glad people are nice enough to post up ideas

I took off the bigger belt and started the car. The noise was still there in a cold start up but just like before if I let it warm up it goes away. I left the smaller belt on tho.

Yeah I was hoping. Now I might go ahead and make a weekend to tear off the valve coverage and make sure everything looks good
Lord please don't let it be a lifter. I don't think a collapsed lifter would stop ticking when warm tho
