I posted this in the General Maintenance forum and didn't get a response, this may be better.....My main question is are all LS blocks the same as far as the back cover?

This is LS related, but is actually on my 2000 5.3 Silverado. Should be the same on an LS1. I'm getting ready to do the rear crank seal and have a few questions after researching. I can get the rear crank seal, updated p/n 89060436 with the white plastic install tool built in for about $15, I can get the rear cover seal gasket for about $15, or I can get the updated rear cover assembly, p/n 12633579, with the gasket, seal, and bolts for $40. The rear cover assembly is the updated version for tsb 05-06-01-034J for 03 and up aluminum blocks. Will this cover work with my LM7 iron 5.3? I know the alignment tool isn't needed anymore for the crank seal, is a tool needed for the cover? Any tips or tricks? Thanks!

 

Yes they all interchange. Your suppose to use a tool to line the rear cover up with the oil pan and it also centers the cover and gasket around the crank end so the seal doesn't wear out prematurely. I looked into the tool, it was $800 at gm. After reading around I just used feeler gauges and got it even, haven't had any problems yet.

 

If thats the case I may just buy the seal so I don't have the chance of screwing with the alignment. Thanks!
