Im doing a hci swap on my car and want opion on what i should use here. The car has 70 k.

Double roller Im in the process of building my motor I bought a ls2 chain and gears and was amazed at how much slack the chain had in it and decided to go with a double roller. 4 degrees of slack is to much in my opinion

 

the more I read about the Ls2 the more I want to stay away from it, do not like the idea of running it without the tensioner.

anyone recommend a good single row chain set?

 

I went with a Cloyes Hex-a-just. They use a slightly larger crank sprocket to remove the slack in the chain. Mine runs nice and tight.

 

Thanks Rickenbackerman. That is what I wanted to hear as I am about to purchase a cahin as well. The benefit being you can also easily degree it and you don't need to mess with the oil pump. I have used Cloyes stuff for years, never an issue.

what's the cost difference in the 2?

 

I think I paid around $160 for the cloyes set. Old set was a Yank ls2 set machined to accept the offset bushings. It worked, but was kind of a pain to degree, and the chain got WAY sloppy after only a couple thousand miles. The cloyes is super easy to adjust, and a bonus is that you get a thrust bearing for the cam.

 

I have the Cloyes with the IRL chain. Standard Cloyes Hex-adjust is the LS2 chain made by Renold. The ability to adjust the cam without removal of the crank sprocket is a great feature of this setup.

 

What's this IRL chain?

Indy Racing League. The chain was originally developed for the Olds Aurora Indy motor some years back to help with some timing chain issues they were having with the motor. It was made from better materials and hand assembled by Renold. Can't remember all the specifics of the manufacturing (have that information at home in correspondence I had with Cloyes) but the chain itself was very expensive. Cloyes had a few left unsold on the shelf and about two years ago SDPC bought the entire inventory. Not sure if they still have any left. This was the strongest single chain ever made for the LS motor.

 

How would it compare to the C5R chain from Katech?

 

The C5R chain from Katech would be my recommendation. Stronger than the LS2 chain and quality built.

I run a C5R chain and have no issues.

 

Cloyes offers the Hexadjust single roller with the C5R chain.



Bring your checkbook though. The set is $275 from Summit.

SLP double roller here. Just make sure you get the "cleared" oil pump too. Strong and cheap. And I feel safer running a double roller on the 402 over a single roller.

*EDIT* - But I bet the Katech chain is well built... they dont mess around over there.

*EDIT 2* - I believe the SLP is a renamed Rollmaster, and I think mine even says roll master on it.

 

I am running a rollmaster double roller and have had it on my Trans Am for about 6 years and never had a problem.

 

bigken what oil pump are you using? did you have to do any cutting on the oil pump to make it fit?
