Default Bad news

I have a 99 trans am. Ls1 6 speed. 79k miles. Bad ticking/scratching noise in the bad of the motor. The oil pump recently went out ad it ran for a couple minutes before I noticed. No noise after I replaced it but a few days later the noise started. Should I dig into it or just get a new motor? My mechanic says new motor

Well, how bad is "bad"? Does bad describe the noise or the severity of the noise. How long did it run for? Either way, you're probably looking at a rebuild.

You might get lucky and get in and find minimal damage. Maybe just some fried seals with warped intervals. In the other hand, the whole guts of the motor might be smoked.

A used ls1 can be had for fairly cheap. On the other hand, a used motor could usually use sone freshening up of it's own. Give us a little more detail, and we might be able to help you more.

Your mechnaic is correct.

FYI - My LT1's oil pump drive assembly went out last month - had to drive it 2 miles (at zero oil pressure) to get it home.

(Yes, I know - Less than smart.)

I replaced the drive unit, checked the cam (it was fine), cleaned the oil pan, buttoned everything back up, and 2 days later - thru an 'effing rod!

So, if your motor is still running, I'd line up a replacement short block BEFORE the original one goes boom.

If you can go through it before it goes boom, the block might be saveable. Whichever way you go, now looks like a good time for a mild build.

i found a semi-local shop that specializes in ls1/lt1. i'm gonna haul it to him saturday. he says by me describing it is not tha bad. he said worse case senario its a spun bearing and he can raplace that with a guarentee for under a grand.. good deal?

or he said he can get me a 56k ls1forr 2800. seems steep to me..
